Hi this is an assignment that I did for school. I hope you enjoy it.

       Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was a very great man. From country boy to President of the United States, he was always a good leader. Let me tell you of this man’s life.
Abe was born in a small cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His father’s name was Thomas and his mother’s name was Nancy. The Lincolns soon moves to a farm on the Cumberland Trail. There Abe went to blab school where children repeat their lesson until they know it.
When Abe was 9 years old Nancy died, which left Abe and his sister Sarah, motherless. The next year, his father married a woman named Sally.
As Abe got older and older, he started reading books and talking about them with his friends until finally, he was old enough to work on a flatboat. There he listened to lawyers. When Abe was about in his twenties, he moved to the town of New Salem.
Abe became a shopkeeper and became popular because of his stories, honesty, and kindness. He was also a wrestler. He took on the county’s toughest wrestler. Abe won and soon became friends with the wrestler. Abe also joined the New Salem Debating Society where he studied law, politics, and history.
He soon met a woman who he liked a lot. Her name was Mary Todd. Like Lincoln she cared deeply about justice, politics, and Poetry. They also had both lost their mothers at a young age. When Abe was 33 he married Mary on November 4. One year later, they bought a house and had two sons. The younger son died at the age of four. After his death Mary gave birth to two more sons.
Abe soon became a lawyer.  The lawyers rode into town, found clients, and then presented their cases right away. Once, in New Salem Abe had to defend an old friend named Duff, who was accused of murder. Thanks to that years almanac, Abe proved that Duff did not do it.
In 1860, the Republican Party chose Abe to run for president. A Republican parade passed Lincoln’s house and there, were so many people, it took 8 hours to pass! Abe won the election but because Abe did not like slavery and thought it was wrong Abe did not receive a single vote from the south.
Then something horrible happened. Almost all the southern states became confederate states and left the union. The south started a civil war. Abe did not know whether to send soldiers or not.
On January 1, 1863 Abe passed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation set free all slaves in the south and let them join the Union army. The confederate president Jefferson Davis did not listen to him because Abe was not their president anymore. On July 4, 1863, the union won a battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On November 19, Abe gave a speech called The Gettysburg Address. Then Abe passed the 13th amendment that freed all the slaves. Slavery was truly gone.
Abe ran for a second term and was reelected. On April 9, the south surrendered. A few nights later Abe and Mary went to a play. But angry actor John Wilkes Booth snuck off stage and shot Lincoln right in the head. The next morning Lincoln died. Today Lincoln is still remembered and always will be. He has a memorial in Washington D.C. because of how great he was. Abraham Lincoln was a great man because he freed the slaves, and he was a great leader because he saved our country.
