First Day at Freedman’s School
My name is
Mary. I am 7 years old. I am an African American. I used to be a slave. My mom
used most of the money we made from sharecropping to buy material to make me a
new dress. I am having a cabbage sandwich for lunch. Mama made it from the food
we got.
It’s my very
first day of school. I am very excited. I walk to school because we can’t ride
farmer Browns horse. Then I get to school. There are tons of kids of all ages.
I see my teacher Mrs. Hairen. She used to work on farmer Browns farm. She’s
talking. She said that we are going to learn the alphabet and how to add today.
I have no idea what that stuff is but it sounds fun. She says that 1+1=2 and
that 2+2=4. Hmm that’s pretty easy. I
raise my hand. “Mrs. Hairen?” I say “If 2+2=4 then was does 4+4=?” She says
that 4+4=8. Hmm that’s cool I’ve only been here ten minutes and I already know
3 things.
Now she says
that were going to learn or alphabet. We sing a song that goes like this
a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,I,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y, and z now I know my abc’s
next time won’t you sing with me. That was fun. She says that’s our alphabet.
She says its lunch break. After that were going to write our alphabet. Mmm.
That cabbage sandwich is good. Now she gives us lined paper. She traces a letter
A on the board. She says to write that down on the paper. A few minutes later
we wrote down all the letters of the alphabet. “Class is dismissed.” ,she says.
I had fun at school today. I am so happy that I’m free.
